Why breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.

Eating breakfast shortly after waking is one of the most important things you can do for your hormonal health. Eating a balanced breakfast with enough protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates from fruit and vegetables, helps to stabilize your blood sugar throughout the day. Naturally when we wake in the morning our cortisol, or stress hormone, levels are the highest. If we jump into working or exercising with only fueling our bodies with a cup of coffee, over time this can lead to adrenal fatigue and insulin resistance. This means are bodies are in a constant state of elevated stress, our nervous system is dysregulated, which leads to spikes in insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating our blood sugar. This can lead to energy crashes later in the day, causing us to feel fatigued, especially in the afternoon. To set the tone for the day, it is important to start the day with a nourishing, balanced meal to keep us full and energized until lunch time. Pasture raised eggs are an excellent source of nutrients and protein. I like to pair 2-3 eggs cooked in a healthy fat, such as ghee or avocado oil, with a complex carbohydrate like sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are full of vitamins, mineral, and fiber and help balance out the meal. The addition of Ceylon cinnamon powder helps to further stabilize blood sugar.
